PESO DA RÉGUA

The municipality was recognized as the International City of Vineyards and Wine in 1988. Its Port Wine helped to catapult the fortunes of Peso da Régua. Peso da Régua, commonly referred to as Régua, is a city in northern Portugal's Vila Real district, situated along the Douro River. With a population of approximately 17,000 residents, it serves as a central hub in the renowned Douro Valley wine region, particularly noted for its production and trade of Port wine. Historically, Régua played a pivotal role in the commercialization of Port wine; barrels were traditionally transported from its docks downriver to Vila Nova de Gaia for aging. Today, the city is home to the Douro Museum, which offers insights into the region's rich viticultural heritage.
